The hardware security module (HSM) is a computing device that comprises single/multi-core processors to secure digital keys. It is also used to encrypt data and enhance the overall security of cryptographic authentication.

HSMs are often used by enterprises, where data verification and transactions take priority over anything else. Each HSM must follow strict certification, complying with the FIPS (Federation Information Processing Standard).

HSM requires customized hardware, dedicated OS along with storage for cryptographic data on a secured network. HSM hardware is either made for general purposes or based on specific payment or cloud requirements.
