Convo Space: The Decentralized Conversation Layer of the Internet
Author: Kaushal
The internet has become an essential part of our life. Every aspect of our life relies on the internet in one way or another. One such aspect is human interaction.
In recent years, people have used the internet to interact with one another. From Facebook and Instagram to Discord and Telegram, we have been massively using these platforms to communicate.
Depending too much on the internet to communicate eventually created a mess. Everyone is using different apps to communicate. Some are using Discord, Some Telegram, and some are still on Facebook.
Let’s understand why this is a big deal and a product that aims to solve the problem.
The Problem With Using Multiple Platforms
As our dependency on the internet increased, we integrated a plethora of software into our life. This led to people using different social media platforms as their primary apps.
Users often have to constantly switch back and forth between multiple applications. Many users find it difficult to track where a particular message came from. If someone is using Telegram as their primary app and you are using Discord, your communication is now limited by your choice of applications.
However, we rarely feel limited by a medium to interact with someone else.
While talking to someone in real life, you can talk about any topic and change the topics of your conversation as you go. Anudit and Manvi, the co-founders of Convo Space, wondered if there is any way to have a seamless experience on the internet. Can we mimic the way we interact with each other in person? How can we stitch together those same experiences across the internet, regardless of platform?
And that's how Convo Space was born!
Introducing: The Convo Space!
Convo is a decentralized conversation layer of the internet. It offers toolings and infrastructure to build composable social platforms across the web. On top of all, it is supercharged by the power of Web3!
Convo enables any platform to build and integrate a social layer inside itself. It offers all the tooling and infrastructure to add a social layer to any forum.
What Can You Build with Convo
Developers can integrate Convo into their applications with one line of code. This requires no additional code or configuration other than a basic setup.
Let's understand a few real-life use cases that we can build with Convo.
Developers can create a conversation layer on your platform to enable community interaction. You can achieve this without having to deal with Web3 complexity.
You can also create conversation threads that are connected to multiple interfaces. You can attach one or more conversations to an NFT. Hence the community can follow it regardless of the marketplace or platform on which the NFT is viewed. This makes it easier to track every conversation around an NFT in a single place.
The third use case is quite unique. Suppose you are transacting funds with an account or a contract. You can verify whether the user or the contract you transact funds with is malicious. You can have the entire conversation on your wallet if you comment on a specific transaction on Etherscan. The community can warn you against it.
Various conversations about a proposal occur across many platforms, including Twitter, Discord, governing dashboards, etc. Convo allows you to create a plug-in that captures governance interfaces to continue these conversations from anywhere.
Key Terminologies
The convo API has two fundamental pillars viz. URL and a thread ID.
The original URL identifies the source platform of the incoming message. It is usually the application connected to your Convo apps, like Discord or Telegram.
The Thread ID sets the context around what is being talked about. It could be an article, transaction, NFT, or anything.
Convo recommends sticking to community standards for common elements such as Ethereum addresses, NFTs, and so on, but this value can be implemented in any way an application sees fit. This helps to keep a consistent stream of thought throughout the web.
Getting Started with Convo
There are five ways you can integrate Convo into your applications.
Convo Embeds
Adding an embed to your website is the simplest way to integrate a Convo into your platform.
Convo provides you with an iframe
that you can embed in the places where you want the content to appear. Embeds are helpful when you have to serve dynamically generated pages requiring one or multiple comment boxes on each one of those pages.
You can embed an entire conversation or an individual comment in your application. The comment will be embedded just like we embed a tweet in our blog post.
You can learn more about Embeds here.
Convo API
Convo API gives you raw access to accessing Convo's protocol and functionality. You can leverage the API to build everything from a simple comment section to a full-blown decentralized Reddit!
The REST API built primarily with Node.JS enables you to play with the core Convo features and toolset so you can benefit from it.
Convo SDK
The Convo SDK is a wrapper around its API. It makes it easier for developers to easily access Convo's core fundamentals.
The SDK is available as a React Library and a JavaScript development kit. You can install either with the help of NPM in your application.
Convo X
The team has natively integrated Convo into different platforms. You can use these ready-made integrations with Convo X.
Convo has built integrations for many popular platforms like BrightID, Browsers, Ghost, Figma, etc.
Bridge
The Convo Bridge maps your Web2 social accounts to your Ethereum identity. This will help you to enable Web2 and Web3 interoperability of conversational experiences.
The bridge is currently in beta. But even in the beta phase, they have integrated major Web2 social media platforms with Convo. These integrations include Telegram, Discord, Zoom, Slack, Twitch, and Spotify.
