Games fueled by Non-Fungible Token (NFT)

In this segment: NFT use case in the gaming industry and some well-known games that use NFTs.

In recent years, blockchain is being integrated into many industries. The gaming industry is one of them, where NFT is implemented. NFT stands for Non-Fungible Token, which are cryptocurrency tokens that possess specific properties and are distinguishable from others.

💡 NFT also represents digital products or physical assets on a blockchain to decentralize and verify ownership and manage digital scarcity.

Ownership of in-game assets is the use case of non-fungible token (NFT).

NFTs are quickly becoming a preferred way for game designers to distribute their content due to their trustless and decentralized nature. In the gaming world, NFTs can be used as digital collectibles that can be purchased on the blockchain and tradable on secondary markets. These digital assets can be then used for games among players or even converted to other cryptocurrencies like Ether and Bitcoin.

Gamers are used to playing with tokens that are tradable and fungible. However, it can be difficult for them to identify them in-game. NFT presents an innovative solution. In this segment, we cover some of the well-known games in web3 that utilize NFTs to their full potential.

1. AxieInfinity

AxieInfinity started as an Ethereum based collectible game now migrated to Ronin an Ethereum-linked sidechain made specifically for Axie Infinity. Following the roots of crypto kitties and the charm of pokemon, this decentralized role-playing game encompasses elements of collectible cars, board games, and a multiplayer fighting arena. It allows you to breed digital creatures called Axies. You can watch them grow, battle, and even trade with your friends.

The Axie Infinity Multiverse consists of thousands of unique Axie species stored in the form of ERC-721 standard. Each one has distinct physical characteristics and traits passed down from generation to generation via Genomic Variation sets. Players battle each other to control restricted land in the virtual world, fight for glory on the leader boards, tournaments and earn rewards through participation in Challenges.

AxieInfinity is reimagining the pet gaming market with blockchain technology. They have built a virtual world where your pets can explore, play games, and battle other players’ pets in a strategic multiplayer gaming experience. Evolution is key in the Axie virtual universe — players battle to win valuable items that enable them to create powerful new one-of-a-kind digital Axie warrior pets.

2. Sorare

Sorare is a World Fantasy Football platform (think soccer, not American football) that runs on the Ethereum network. It has been programmed in Solidity and is available on the Ethereum blockchain as an ERC-721 token. It’s free for everyone and can be played in numerous languages. In Sorare there are two parties who can play: the players from all over the world and the owners of fantasy teams.

Fantasy football is recognised as an industry that generates more than a billion dollars in revenue. It has its own economics and is a growing business with great potential to expand even further. Sorare started off from the fantasy football challenges – where fantasy owners join leagues and win money challenges based on their skill – as this is a great way to gather feedback from the community.

Sorare is a 100% decentralized platform. In other words, the league’s rules and results are decided from season to season through proposals submitted in the Ethereum network. The players gain points depending on how they perform during real football matches. They can reveal their team members’ latest stats to add more hype to their fantasy teams.

3. Blockchain Cuties Universe

Blockchain cuties universe calls itself the first-ever multi-blockchain collectible game with adventures. It’s a collectible crypto game with stationary adventure experiences (click to simulate the adventure). Usually, with such games, you don’t have complete control over your character. You leave outcomes of a battle or any adventure on the probability and stats of the character you own.

Here you can start your adventure by purchasing a puppy, lizard, bear cub, cat, or any available fantasy creature. Blockchain Cuties Universe lets you in on a simulated battle with other cuties and level up your character using purchasable items.

The cutie you own is an NFT powered by Ethereum, EOS, TRON, and NEO blockchains. With the in-game currency, you can trade or sell your cuties to different players. Recently they announced a partnership with Polygon, and thus the latest update will let you purchase your first cutie for less than usual, and the game will be faster.

4. ChainGuardians

ChainGuardians: “Blockchain for Superheroes” is a strategy game sourcing its theme from Japanese anime. The best part about this Ethereum powered game? You can get started for free! Additionally, you get incentives for playtime and character development.

Majorly gamers are more attracted to the storyline and gaming mechanics. With ChainGuardians, you get a great concept artwork followed by an immersive storyline. Here players can take guardians to fight PVP battles, conquer dungeons, fortresses, and castles. A fun aspect here is the implementation of AI-powered mechanics where gaming doesn’t stop even if you are inactive or go offline.

In character development, guardians have natural stats like intellect, stamina, agility, charisma, and strength. You progress by developing and upgrading the stats and fighting more battles in multi-player or single-player modes. In-game items are ERC721 (NFTs) that players can trade outside of the game on platforms such as OpenSea and other NFT marketplaces.

Summing Up:

Ethereum based games have grown a lot in the past year in terms of active users and transaction volume. For example, the NFT game AxieInfinity has recorded a 50%+ user growth and transaction volume in the past year alone (source). NFT in gaming is a new way of using NFTs to make your gaming experience exciting, memorable, and fun. But there are always two sides to a coin. Introducing NFT in games and a pay-to-play tactic can hinder the overall experience by making it more of a business than a game where the gaming element is usually simulated or non-existent.
